Our first stop in Colorado was Durango. We spent 3 days and 4 nights at a campground just outside the city. Alas, we didn’t camp, but stayed in a cabin with a full kitchen and a bathroom. Bliss! There was also a creek running outside our cabin (running with snow melt – ask C if he would recommend walking across it!)
The city of Durango was very cute – we’ve definitely left the desert and are now in a western mountain town.
Our first day in Durango, we did exciting things such as laundry and groceries (I could’ve sworn that someone said there was a laundry fairy when you traveled so you didn’t have to do anything as mundane as that ).
The next day, we woke up early to take the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad train to Silverton. The 48-mile train ride took THREE AND A HALF HOURS – each way! We had some very scenic views and it was kind of fun, but the amount of time on the train was a bit much. It was nice, but I’m not sure I would do it again. But here are some nice pictures:
After our first 48-mile/3.5 hour leg (parts of which you could’ve gotten out and run faster – at least C could have 😉 ), we stopped in the scenic town of Silverton, Colorado. It was another cute little Western town with one paved road. It really reminded me of Alaska. We had about an hour and a half there, so we had lunch at the Brown Bear Cafe (nothing special, but not bad for a tiny Colorado mountain town) and walked around a little bit, before we hopped back on the train for the ride back.
