Whistle Stop Tour of Spain

Hello – we are still here! We have just been in a bit of a travel slump lately. Actually, let me rephrase that, we have been in a travel BAN lately! We spent a large chunk of the last school year stuck in the Granada province here in Spain. Being Read more…

Lapland, Finland…the Highlight!

BIG, HUGE, GIANT DISCLAIMER: We are lazy. This trip was back at the end of 2019, pre-COVID, back when travel was possible and the thought of not easily being able to hop on a plane and go pretty much wherever we wanted was unfathomable. How many other things were unfathomable Read more…

Post Quarantine Update from Spain

Oh 2020, you’ve been a trip! (but not like a physical trip, since we haven’t really left our little town in more than three months…). Just like the common experience of basically all fellow inhabitants of Earth, our last few months were dominated by the pesky coronavirus, COVID-19. It is Read more…

Quarantined in Spain – What a difference a week makes!

We will take a break from our regularly scheduled programming (in our blog world, we are still enjoying a week in the snow in Finland), to share a bit about life here in Spain in the midst of the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak. Spain has suddenly emerged as the 2nd worst Read more…

Visiting Santa’s Home Turf in Lapland, Finland

After spending the first few days of our trip to Lapland, Finland in the small town of Luosto in our log cabin (complete with sauna), we headed for the bright lights of Rovaniemi. Rovaniemi is a town of around 60,000. It is the administrative capital of Lapland, but far more Read more…

Snow, Santa and Cynicism in Luosto, Finland

After months of travel around South America, we were back in Europe but we felt like we had one final trip in us before our big 2019 Travel Year was over. We had a few criteria in mind: we wanted to end our big travel adventure with a bang; we Read more…

The University and Harry Potter in Oxford, England

Last you heard from us, we were on the (almost) southern tip of a continent in the southern hemisphere. Now, just like that, we are back “home”, plopped straight into winter in the northern hemisphere. Now don’t get us wrong, we loved South America and we have (almost) nothing but Read more…

Last Stop in Buenos Aires, Argentina

Our last stop in South America was Buenos Aires, Argentina. Our expectations of the city were lowered because one of our traveling family friends spoke quite badly of it – huge city, nine lane roads to cross etc. etc. However, we stayed in the Palermo neighborhood, which was a little Read more…

The Road More Traveled in Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay

Our second stop in Uruguay would also be our last stop in Uruguay, and our second-to-last stop on our whole South American adventure. We’ve been to a lot of amazing places in the continent and enjoyed both roads – the one more traveled and the one less traveled. In Uruguay, Read more…

‘Living’ in Montevideo, Uruguay

One of our family travel sayings (in addition to our one about the Dutch: “everywhere you go, there they are” – seriously, those dutch get EVERYWHERE) is that there are ‘living’ cities and ‘visiting’ cities. It’s not completely binary, but more of a fluid spectrum and based entirely on our Read more…

So that is where we went! It was a tough trek but an amazing experience - including spotting a few orangutan in the wild. #travelwithkids #sumatra #orangutan

Back to Galapagos (he doesn’t remember it well from when we were there 5 years ago) but this time they went to Isabela island, and it by far surpassed anything we saw before. He might as well stop snorkeling now, cause I don’t think this will be beaten.
Summer trip to Southern Africa. In addition to lot Summer trip to Southern Africa. In addition to lots of amazing animal sightings on safari, we couldn’t miss seeing Victoria Falls (from both the Zambia and Zimbabwe sides). Though to be be honest, it was a bit hard to see anything much of the time with so much water spraying everywhere! #victoriafalls #victoriafallszimbabwe #mosioatunya #thesmokethatthunders #travelwithkids #familytravel #zimbabwetravel
We took a short trip during the kids spring break. We took a short trip during the kids spring break. We have traveled with the kids a lot as they grew up but it is getting harder as the kids get older. They just don’t want to go anywhere. We are trying to compromise and take fewer, shorter and/or cooler trips. The teenager is hard to impress though. Hoping once he is a young adult and broke and on his own, he will come back to wanting to travel with us for the free trips 😝. Until then, we will try to give him more input on where and when we go. #sanfrancisco #travelwithkids #travelwithteens

Wrapping up another summer trip to Scotland. We lo Wrapping up another summer trip to Scotland. We love the cool weather, long days of sunlight, fresh air and green fields when we visit Scotland in the summer. I love that the kids get this time with family and I know they will grow up and have great memories of their visits here. As we head back to hot, humid and uncomfortable summer in the US Deep South, we will look forward to next summer! #scotland #travelwithkids
While we were in Scotland this summer, I decided t While we were in Scotland this summer, I decided to book one quick little side trip, so did some research to find a good, easy destination to take one kid for a few days. Tallin, Estonia was not really a place I’d given much thought to, but I’m glad this was the place we ended up. Absolutely beautiful old town, easy to walk around, good food and an interesting history. Also loved having just one of the kids with me - we had a lot of fun together and he was a lot more willing to hang out with me when it was just the two of us somewhere new and exciting. Plus, wow it is much easier to get a table at a restaurant for 2 people than it is for 5! #travelwithkids #estonia #tallinn #familytravel
