A boat, a town and a few beaches – Algarve, Portugal

I’ve already blogged about our scenic cliff hike and climbing on rocks while in Portugal, so this last post will cover a boat trip, a day at the beach, and an afternoon in the town of Silves to wrap up our time in Portugal. First up, because I like to Read more…

Cliff Climbing at Algar Seco, Portugal

While in Portugal, we had an absolute blast climbing all over the limestone cliffs in Algar Seco.  Algar Seco is located in Carvoeiro, the nearest town to where we stayed during our trip.  There is a short walkway along the cliff, and midway through, there is a staircase leading down Read more…

Hiking Portugal’s Algarve Coast

After two months in Spain, we had finally recovered from the constant travels of the previous six months enough to take another road trip.  We hopped in the car and drove 5 1/2 hours to Portugal. We are living on a beach in Spain right now, so it seems a Read more…

Olive Harvesting in the Olive Oil Capital

Jaen in Spain produces 20% of the world’s supply of olive oil.  Jaen has more than 66 million olive trees, spread over 550,000 hectares.  Jaen is located less than 2 hours north of us, so when we were invited as part of a small group to join a Spanish family Read more…

Barcelona with Gaudí (and the kids)

Leading up to our trip to Barcelona, we were following the news on Catalonia’s independence movement very closely, since it was all happening around the time we had planned to be there. We waited until just the week before to decide if we would stop on our way through, and Read more…

The Roman Province in Southern France

The area of Provence in France is full of amazing Roman-era architecture.  In fact, Provence is so-called because of its name in Roman times, Provincia Romania, since it was Rome’s first province beyond the Alps. Our first day trip, and our second famous bridge, from our base in Avignon was the Read more…

On the Bridge of Avignon, France

“On the bridge of Avignon” or “Sur le pont d’Avignon” – you may be familiar with these songs. If so, I’m sure you are now singing them in your head.  If not, go youtube it.  We are partial to this version.  So guess where we just spent a week!? This Read more…

Strolling Around Colmar, France

After spending every last Swiss Franc to our name, we hopped over the border and spent a few days in Colmar, France.  Colmar is in the Alsace region, very close to the border with Germany.  In fact, it has been part of Germany a time or two. After a busy Read more…

Part 2 of “One Day in the Swiss Alps needs two blog posts!”

When we last left off, we were at the top of Mt. Titlis and it was starting to get crowded with tour groups.  So, we hopped back on the cable car and headed down the mountain.  But, instead of riding all the way down to Engelberg, we stopped here: This Read more…

One day in the Swiss Alps needs two blog posts! Part 1

Flying over glaciers, ice caves, hikes with mountain views, trails that have hammocks.  If this wasn’t my favorite day of the trip, it is certainly in the top five! We booked a fairly inexpensive (for Switzerland!) Airbnb in the popular winter ski resort town of Engelberg. We chose it for Read more…

So that is where we went! It was a tough trek but an amazing experience - including spotting a few orangutan in the wild. #travelwithkids #sumatra #orangutan

Back to Galapagos (he doesn’t remember it well from when we were there 5 years ago) but this time they went to Isabela island, and it by far surpassed anything we saw before. He might as well stop snorkeling now, cause I don’t think this will be beaten.
Summer trip to Southern Africa. In addition to lot Summer trip to Southern Africa. In addition to lots of amazing animal sightings on safari, we couldn’t miss seeing Victoria Falls (from both the Zambia and Zimbabwe sides). Though to be be honest, it was a bit hard to see anything much of the time with so much water spraying everywhere! #victoriafalls #victoriafallszimbabwe #mosioatunya #thesmokethatthunders #travelwithkids #familytravel #zimbabwetravel
We took a short trip during the kids spring break. We took a short trip during the kids spring break. We have traveled with the kids a lot as they grew up but it is getting harder as the kids get older. They just don’t want to go anywhere. We are trying to compromise and take fewer, shorter and/or cooler trips. The teenager is hard to impress though. Hoping once he is a young adult and broke and on his own, he will come back to wanting to travel with us for the free trips 😝. Until then, we will try to give him more input on where and when we go. #sanfrancisco #travelwithkids #travelwithteens

Wrapping up another summer trip to Scotland. We lo Wrapping up another summer trip to Scotland. We love the cool weather, long days of sunlight, fresh air and green fields when we visit Scotland in the summer. I love that the kids get this time with family and I know they will grow up and have great memories of their visits here. As we head back to hot, humid and uncomfortable summer in the US Deep South, we will look forward to next summer! #scotland #travelwithkids
While we were in Scotland this summer, I decided t While we were in Scotland this summer, I decided to book one quick little side trip, so did some research to find a good, easy destination to take one kid for a few days. Tallin, Estonia was not really a place I’d given much thought to, but I’m glad this was the place we ended up. Absolutely beautiful old town, easy to walk around, good food and an interesting history. Also loved having just one of the kids with me - we had a lot of fun together and he was a lot more willing to hang out with me when it was just the two of us somewhere new and exciting. Plus, wow it is much easier to get a table at a restaurant for 2 people than it is for 5! #travelwithkids #estonia #tallinn #familytravel
