Hiking and Biking in Banff, Canada

Our last stop in the Canadian Rockies was the town of Banff, within Banff National Park. We had already spent time in the Lake Louise area of Banff, but after time in Jasper, we stayed in a few days in the Hidden Ridge Resort, sitting just above Banff town. We Read more…

Notes from the Road – Canada Edition

We are back on the road and in the middle of our 6 month Americas (plus Scotland) trip. We spent a few weeks in Canada, specifically within, and around, Banff and Jasper National Parks in Alberta. I’m still working on blog posts from our time there, but wanted to include Read more…

White Water Rafting & Jasper National Park

After our time on the Icefields Parkway, we arrived at Jasper National Park, about a 4-hour drive north of Banff. We spent just a few days in Jasper, but had lots of adventures (good and bad!) while we were there. Athabasca Falls Just south of the town of Jasper, at Read more…

Icefields Parkway III: Parker Ridge Trail Hike

While staying on the Icefields Parkway near Sunwapta Falls, we took a fantastic hike along from a trailhead just south of the Columbia Icefields Discovery Centre. This hike took us up and along the Parker Ridge trail, with mountain and glacier views. The very beginning of the hike took us Read more…

Icefields Parkway Highlights II: Peyto Lake, Mistaya Canyon & Sunwapta Falls

As I mentioned in my last post, we thoroughly enjoyed traveling on Canada’s Icefields Parkway, between Banff and Jasper National Parks. In addition to the Columbia Icefield, we made a few other fun stops. Peyto Lake We visited Peyto Lake right after the rigmarole of waking up at 5am in Read more…

Icefields Parkway, the Athabasca Glacier and Global Warming

They say that the Icefields Parkway, connecting Canada’s Banff and Jasper National Parks, is one of the most spectacular drives in the world.  We agree!  The views were stunning in all directions, and there were great stops along the way. We drove up and down the entire length of the Read more…

The Early Bird Gets the parking Spot at Moraine Lake

As I mentioned in my earlier post, the Lake Louise area of Banff National Park is c-r-a-z-y. The parking lots fill up by 8am, and after that you are forced to wait in a long line at a park and ride lot. However, when I say the parking lots fill Read more…

The Turquoise Lakes of Banff National Park

During our Canada trip, we spent a few days exploring the Lake Louise area of Banff National Park.  This area is well known for its amazing turquoise colored lakes, which get their color from the glaciers. These glaciers grind the rocks below them, creating rock flour, which gets carried with Read more…

Adventures in Canmore, Alberta, Canada

When planning our big trip over the second half of 2019 I realized, after researching the best dates for low airfare leaving Europe and calculating exactly how many days we could stay in the US before losing our foreign earned income exclusion, that a few weeks in Canada would fit Read more…

Relaxing on 30A – On the beach in Florida’s Panhandle

We flew back to the USA for the first time in over a year and a half to spend the holidays with family.  We divided up our time by spending one week in Atlanta to take care of business (and by “business” I mostly mean going through the many boxes Read more…

So that is where we went! It was a tough trek but an amazing experience - including spotting a few orangutan in the wild. #travelwithkids #sumatra #orangutan

He got to pick where he wanted to go for this trip He got to pick where he wanted to go for this trip. Back to Galapagos (he doesn’t remember it well from when we were there 5 years ago) but this time they went to Isabela island, and it by far surpassed anything we saw before. He might as well stop snorkeling now, cause I don’t think this will be beaten.
Summer trip to Southern Africa. In addition to lot Summer trip to Southern Africa. In addition to lots of amazing animal sightings on safari, we couldn’t miss seeing Victoria Falls (from both the Zambia and Zimbabwe sides). Though to be be honest, it was a bit hard to see anything much of the time with so much water spraying everywhere! #victoriafalls #victoriafallszimbabwe #mosioatunya #thesmokethatthunders #travelwithkids #familytravel #zimbabwetravel
We took a short trip during the kids spring break. We took a short trip during the kids spring break. We have traveled with the kids a lot as they grew up but it is getting harder as the kids get older. They just don’t want to go anywhere. We are trying to compromise and take fewer, shorter and/or cooler trips. The teenager is hard to impress though. Hoping once he is a young adult and broke and on his own, he will come back to wanting to travel with us for the free trips 😝. Until then, we will try to give him more input on where and when we go. #sanfrancisco #travelwithkids #travelwithteens

Wrapping up another summer trip to Scotland. We lo Wrapping up another summer trip to Scotland. We love the cool weather, long days of sunlight, fresh air and green fields when we visit Scotland in the summer. I love that the kids get this time with family and I know they will grow up and have great memories of their visits here. As we head back to hot, humid and uncomfortable summer in the US Deep South, we will look forward to next summer! #scotland #travelwithkids
While we were in Scotland this summer, I decided t While we were in Scotland this summer, I decided to book one quick little side trip, so did some research to find a good, easy destination to take one kid for a few days. Tallin, Estonia was not really a place I’d given much thought to, but I’m glad this was the place we ended up. Absolutely beautiful old town, easy to walk around, good food and an interesting history. Also loved having just one of the kids with me - we had a lot of fun together and he was a lot more willing to hang out with me when it was just the two of us somewhere new and exciting. Plus, wow it is much easier to get a table at a restaurant for 2 people than it is for 5! #travelwithkids #estonia #tallinn #familytravel
