We arrived in Ecuador on August 1st and left for Peru on August 31st. In between we went to the Galapagos, the Amazon Rainforest and the middle of the world, among others. Here are our general observations from our first country in South America. Language – since we have been Read more…

We’ll Always Have Cuenca (Ecuador)

We had high hopes for Cuenca as we left Quito airport for the final time. The prior couple of weeks in the Galapagos and Amazon had been amazing, but tiring. As a result, our Cuenca wish list included laundry facilities, good internet, our own space to relax, a kitchen to Read more…

Active in the Ecuadorian Amazon (Part 3)

Each day in the Amazon we did a morning and afternoon activity, which was good because we we were in the middle of a rain forest and couldn’t leave the lodge on our own, and the kids needed to burn off some energy! After we left the Rainforest, we asked Read more…

Staying in the Ecuadorian Amazon (Part 2)

For our week in the Ecuadorian Amazon Rain forest, we stayed at a lodge called Gaia Amazon Lodge located outside of Tena, Ecuador. Our stay was very well organized with a morning activity and an afternoon activity each day. We also had all our meals prepared for us. We normally Read more…

Lost in the Ecuadorian Amazon (Part 1)

After the Galapagos, a trip to the Amazon was our second top priority in South America (even if we did worry about packing all the ‘fun’ things into the first month of our trip!) We were picked up from the crater early in the morning and after a long, winding Read more…

The Galapagos Islands, Ecuador – The Day of the Fish (and Nas Daily)

Our last full day on the island of Santa Cruz in the Galapagos, we had a few options of things to do and finally, somewhat halfheartedly, decided on swimming in Las Grietas, an interesting geographical formation formed by (of course) volcanoes, filled by a mix of fresh and salt water. Read more…

The Galapagos Islands, Ecuador – The Day of the Marine Iguanas (and more!) at Tortuga Bay

Tortuga Bay is a beautiful beach on the island of Santa Cruz on the Galapagos Islands. The beach is reached by a fairly-long walkway from the main town of Puerto Ayora. As we exited the walkway, we were deposited on a huge sandy beach called Playa Brava, and as beautiful Read more…

The Galapagos Islands, Ecuador – The Day of the Birds (plus, Sea Lions!)

Our trip to the Galapagos Islands was land-based, meaning we didn’t go on a cruise from island to island, but instead based ourselves on one island, Santa Cruz. However, in order to see a bit more of the amazing animals, we booked a day trip to the nearby North Seymour Read more…

The Galapagos Islands, Ecuador – The Day of the Tortoises

On our first full day on Santa Cruz, our base for our stay in the Galapagos Islands, we headed to the wet highlands of the island, where the Galapagos tortoises like to hang out. The tortoises move freely in the highlands, even going onto private ranch lands. Rather than fighting Read more…

The Galapagos Islands, Ecuador – Four Days of Adventure

When making our initial plans for South America, we very nearly didn’t bother with the Galapagos Islands, an archipelago of volcanic islands located in the Pacific Ocean about 500 miles off the coast of Ecuador. These islands are famous for its unique animals, who have had a chance to evolve Read more…

So that is where we went! It was a tough trek but an amazing experience - including spotting a few orangutan in the wild. #travelwithkids #sumatra #orangutan

He got to pick where he wanted to go for this trip He got to pick where he wanted to go for this trip. Back to Galapagos (he doesn’t remember it well from when we were there 5 years ago) but this time they went to Isabela island, and it by far surpassed anything we saw before. He might as well stop snorkeling now, cause I don’t think this will be beaten.
Summer trip to Southern Africa. In addition to lot Summer trip to Southern Africa. In addition to lots of amazing animal sightings on safari, we couldn’t miss seeing Victoria Falls (from both the Zambia and Zimbabwe sides). Though to be be honest, it was a bit hard to see anything much of the time with so much water spraying everywhere! #victoriafalls #victoriafallszimbabwe #mosioatunya #thesmokethatthunders #travelwithkids #familytravel #zimbabwetravel
We took a short trip during the kids spring break. We took a short trip during the kids spring break. We have traveled with the kids a lot as they grew up but it is getting harder as the kids get older. They just don’t want to go anywhere. We are trying to compromise and take fewer, shorter and/or cooler trips. The teenager is hard to impress though. Hoping once he is a young adult and broke and on his own, he will come back to wanting to travel with us for the free trips 😝. Until then, we will try to give him more input on where and when we go. #sanfrancisco #travelwithkids #travelwithteens

Wrapping up another summer trip to Scotland. We lo Wrapping up another summer trip to Scotland. We love the cool weather, long days of sunlight, fresh air and green fields when we visit Scotland in the summer. I love that the kids get this time with family and I know they will grow up and have great memories of their visits here. As we head back to hot, humid and uncomfortable summer in the US Deep South, we will look forward to next summer! #scotland #travelwithkids
While we were in Scotland this summer, I decided t While we were in Scotland this summer, I decided to book one quick little side trip, so did some research to find a good, easy destination to take one kid for a few days. Tallin, Estonia was not really a place I’d given much thought to, but I’m glad this was the place we ended up. Absolutely beautiful old town, easy to walk around, good food and an interesting history. Also loved having just one of the kids with me - we had a lot of fun together and he was a lot more willing to hang out with me when it was just the two of us somewhere new and exciting. Plus, wow it is much easier to get a table at a restaurant for 2 people than it is for 5! #travelwithkids #estonia #tallinn #familytravel
