A Family of Five Exploring the World

A Few Days at Mesa Verde National Park

After we left Durango, we headed to Mesa Verde National Park, where we were going to make our second attempt at camping.  It is less than an hour from Durango to the visitor center, so we went in the morning Read more…

The Million Dollar Highway

While in Durango, we took a day to drive on the Million Dollar Highway, from Durango to Ouray, Colorado.  Technically, I think the part from Silverton – Ouray is the “million dollar” part (it isn’t clear whether it is so Read more…

A day on the Durango & Silverton Railroad (yes, a WHOLE, long day!)

Our first stop in Colorado was Durango.  We spent 3 days and 4 nights at a campground just outside the city.  Alas, we didn’t camp, but stayed in a cabin with a full kitchen and a bathroom.  Bliss!  There was Read more…

More Notes from the Road – New Mexico edition

In the last random post from the road, I listed the animals we nearly hit while driving, and I’m excited (?) to report a new one – a vulture!  There were a few huge vultures on the left side of Read more…

Lunch with a Llama

Before we left home, we booked a hike with a llama.  The hike was scheduled to leave from the same campground north of Taos in the Carson National Forest that we wimped out of camping in the night before.  So, Read more…

The Low Road to Taos

Heading from Santa Fe to Taos, via Bandelier National Monument, we had the choice between the scenic High Road to Taos and the less scenic but 1/2 hour faster Low Road.  Sadly, I was outvoted and we ended up taking Read more…

Bandelier National Monument

I’m new to this blogging thing and somehow managed to delete my pretty-much-finished blog post about Bandelier National Monument, and let me tell you, it was FANTASTIC! The best blog post ever.  I mean it was HUGE!  But, now I Read more…

White Sands National Monument

In the middle of southern New Mexico, near where they first detonated a nuclear weapon under the Manhattan Project in 1945, lies a 275 square-mile field of white sand dunes composed of gypsum crystals. There were really no hikes to Read more…

Random Notes from the Road – West Texas Edition: Here are the exotic animals we nearly hit on our drive through West Texas and New Mexico today: a baby bunny (we think) – probably some sort of desert hare a Read more…

So that is where we went! It was a tough trek but an amazing experience - including spotting a few orangutan in the wild. #travelwithkids #sumatra #orangutan

He got to pick where he wanted to go for this trip He got to pick where he wanted to go for this trip. Back to Galapagos (he doesn’t remember it well from when we were there 5 years ago) but this time they went to Isabela island, and it by far surpassed anything we saw before. He might as well stop snorkeling now, cause I don’t think this will be beaten.
Summer trip to Southern Africa. In addition to lot Summer trip to Southern Africa. In addition to lots of amazing animal sightings on safari, we couldn’t miss seeing Victoria Falls (from both the Zambia and Zimbabwe sides). Though to be be honest, it was a bit hard to see anything much of the time with so much water spraying everywhere! #victoriafalls #victoriafallszimbabwe #mosioatunya #thesmokethatthunders #travelwithkids #familytravel #zimbabwetravel
We took a short trip during the kids spring break. We took a short trip during the kids spring break. We have traveled with the kids a lot as they grew up but it is getting harder as the kids get older. They just don’t want to go anywhere. We are trying to compromise and take fewer, shorter and/or cooler trips. The teenager is hard to impress though. Hoping once he is a young adult and broke and on his own, he will come back to wanting to travel with us for the free trips 😝. Until then, we will try to give him more input on where and when we go. #sanfrancisco #travelwithkids #travelwithteens

Wrapping up another summer trip to Scotland. We lo Wrapping up another summer trip to Scotland. We love the cool weather, long days of sunlight, fresh air and green fields when we visit Scotland in the summer. I love that the kids get this time with family and I know they will grow up and have great memories of their visits here. As we head back to hot, humid and uncomfortable summer in the US Deep South, we will look forward to next summer! #scotland #travelwithkids
While we were in Scotland this summer, I decided t While we were in Scotland this summer, I decided to book one quick little side trip, so did some research to find a good, easy destination to take one kid for a few days. Tallin, Estonia was not really a place I’d given much thought to, but I’m glad this was the place we ended up. Absolutely beautiful old town, easy to walk around, good food and an interesting history. Also loved having just one of the kids with me - we had a lot of fun together and he was a lot more willing to hang out with me when it was just the two of us somewhere new and exciting. Plus, wow it is much easier to get a table at a restaurant for 2 people than it is for 5! #travelwithkids #estonia #tallinn #familytravel
